Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها: Witness to the Hadith al-Kisa and Keeper of the Soil of Karbala

Among the Mothers of the Believers — the wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها holds a particular place in the story of the Ahl al-Bayt. She kept it.

Her Marriage to the Prophet ﷺ and Her Character

Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها — whose full name was Hind bint Abi Umayya — was the widow of Sayyiduna Abu Salamah رضي الله عنه, one of the earliest and most devoted companions. After his passing from wounds sustained in battle, the Prophet ﷺ married her. She was known for her intelligence, her sound judgment, and her willingness to speak and advise — the Prophet ﷺ consulted her on important occasions, including during the crisis at Hudaybiyyah, when her advice was instrumental in resolving a potentially disastrous impasse among the companions.

The Soil of Karbala

The classical sources record that the angel Jibril عليه السلام brought the Prophet ﷺ soil from the plains of Karbala and told him of the manner in which his grandson Sayyiduna al-Husayn رضي الله عنه would one day be killed there. He then gave the soil to Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها — entrusting it to her care — and said: “When you see this soil turn to blood, know that al-Husayn has been killed.” She kept the soil in a vessel. On the day of Ashura 61 AH, she looked at the vessel and found the soil had turned red. She had kept the prophetic trust for decades — and the soil’s change was the Prophet’s ﷺ message reaching her across time.

Her Narrations About the Ahl al-Bayt

Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها is among the most important narrators of traditions specifically about the Ahl al-Bayt. She narrated the account of the Verse of Tathir (33:33) — recording that the Prophet ﷺ had drawn the cloak over Sayyidah Fatima, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna al-Hasan, and Sayyiduna al-Husayn رضي الله عنه and prayed for their purification, after which the verse was revealed. She was asked by those who wondered whether they too could enter under the cloak, and the Prophet ﷺ replied with words that established the specific identification of those under it. Her narration is one of the primary Sunni sources for the event.

What happened when Sayyidatuna Umm Salamah looked at the soil of Karbala?

Classical scholars understand this entrusting as a testimony to her trustworthiness, her love for the Prophet’s family, and her role as one of the most reliable witnesses to the prophetic household’s story.
