The Event of Mubāhala: When the Prophet ﷺ Brought Only His Family as Divine Proof

The Event of Mubāhala — when the Prophet ﷺ was challenged to a mutual imprecation and responded by bringing only his family. What this Qurʼānic event reveals about the station of the Ahl al-Bayt.

In the year 10 AH, a delegation from the Christians of Najrān came to Madīnah to debate the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ on matters of theology — principally the nature of ʿĪsā ibn Maryam عليه السلام. The debate reached an impasse, and Allāh ﷻ revealed Sūrat Āl ʿImrān 3:61: “Then whoever argues with you about it after this knowledge has come to you, say: Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves. Then let us invoke a mutual curse so that the curse of Allāh may be upon the liars.” The event that followed — known as the Mubāhala — is one of the most theologically significant moments in the Sīrah of the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet’s Choice

When the Prophet ﷺ came to the Mubāhala — to the mutual invocation of divine curse upon the party speaking falsehood — he brought with him only four people: Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ رضي الله عنها, Sayyiduna ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه, and Sayyiduna al-Ḥasan and Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضوان الله عليهما. He could have brought any of his companions — any of the thousands of sincere Muslims who had sacrificed everything for Islām. He brought these four. They were the most beloved, the most spiritually elevated, the closest to himself in the sight of Allāh ﷻ.

The Qurʼānic Significance

The verse of Mubāhala identifies the participants as “our sons, our women, and ourselves” — and the Prophet’s ﷺ identification of who these were is among the most direct Qurʼānic validations of the Ahl al-Bayt’s unique status. “Our sons” were al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn. “Our women” was Fāṭimah. “Ourselves” included ʿAlī. Classical Sunni commentators including Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله and Imām al-Qurṭubī رحمه الله recorded this identification without dispute.

The Christians’ Response

According to classical sources, the Christians of Najrān — seeing the radiance and certainty of those the Prophet ﷺ brought — declined the mutual invocation. Their leader reportedly said that he saw faces which, if they prayed to Allāh ﷻ to move a mountain, the mountain would move. They withdrew from the Mubāhala and accepted a treaty instead. The refusal of the Christians to proceed is itself a testimony — a recognition, by opponents, of the spiritual authority of those the Prophet ﷺ had brought.

What the Mubāhala Reveals

The Event of Mubāhala reveals the Prophet’s ﷺ own understanding of who, among all of humanity, stood closest to Allāh ﷻ alongside himself. When everything was at stake — when a divine curse was to be invoked by the party speaking falsehood — the Prophet ﷺ chose these four. This choice was not sentimental or personal preference alone. It was a declaration, confirmed in a Qurʼānic verse, of the spiritual station of the Ahl al-Bayt.

What is the Event of Mubāhala?

The Mubāhala was a mutual imprecation — a challenge from the Christians of Najrān and the Prophet’s ﷺ response — in which both parties were to invoke divine curse upon the liars. The Prophet ﷺ came with Sayyidah Fāṭimah, Sayyiduna ʿAlī, Sayyiduna al-Ḥasan, and Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضوان الله عليهم. The Christians declined to proceed.

Which Qurʼānic verse relates to the Mubāhala?

Sūrat Āl ʿImrān 3:61: “Say: Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves, then invoke a curse upon the liars.” Classical Sunni commentators confirmed that “our sons” referred to al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, “our women” to Fāṭimah, and “ourselves” included ʿAlī رضوان الله عليهم.

Why did the Prophet ﷺ choose only his immediate family for the Mubāhala?

Because they were the most beloved and spiritually elevated among all people in the sight of Allāh ﷻ — as confirmed by the Qurʼān’s own record of his choice. When the moment demanded the most truthful, the most righteous, and the closest to Allāh ﷻ, the Prophet ﷺ brought these four. No further commentary on their station is needed.
