Among all the saints of the Sunni tradition, none is more celebrated than Sayyiduna Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani رحمه الله (470–561 AH), the founder of the Qadiriyyah order and a figure venerated across the entire Muslim world for nearly nine centuries. Hanbali in his jurisprudence, a master of Quran, hadith, and fiqh trained in the Nizamiyyah of Baghdad, he was also — by both his father’s and his mother’s lineage — a direct descendant of the Prophet ﷺ. His life and teaching embody the union of Sunni orthodoxy and intense love for the Prophet’s family that defines the arifin.
Both Hasani and Hussaini by Lineage
Sayyiduna Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani رحمه الله carried the blood of the Prophet ﷺ through both his parents. His paternal line traces back through several generations to Sayyiduna al-Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنه — making him Hasani. His maternal line traces, through the Imams of the household including Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, and Imam Zayn al-Abidin رحمهم الله, back to Sayyiduna al-Husayn ibn Ali رضي الله عنه — making him Hussaini. In his person, the two branches of the prophetic lineage met. The most celebrated saint of the Sunni world was, quite literally, a son of the Ahl al-Bayt.
The Light Carried in the Blood of the Family
A teaching associated with the great masters of the spiritual path — including Sayyiduna Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani رحمه الله — concerns the light, the nur, that the Prophet’s family carries. The understanding is that the members of the Ahl al-Bayt inherit something of the Prophetic light through their lineage — not a share in prophethood, which ended with the Messenger ﷺ, but a transmitted blessing, a luminosity of the heart that flows through the blood of the family. For the saints, this was part of why the Ahl al-Bayt held such a station: they carried, in their very being, a connection to the light of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one outside the family could claim in the same way.
His Teaching on Love of the Prophet ﷺ and His Family
In his discourses — collected in works such as al-Fath al-Rabbani (The Sublime Revelation) and al-Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq (Sufficient Provision for Seekers of the Path of Truth) — Sayyiduna Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani رحمه الله repeatedly taught that the foundation of the spiritual path is following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and loving him with the whole heart. And love of the Prophet ﷺ, in his teaching, necessarily includes love of his family. He taught his disciples to honour the Ahl al-Bayt, to follow their example of worship and detachment from the world, and to recognise in them the inheritors of the Prophetic character. His own life — marked by extraordinary zuhd, generosity, and devotion — was understood by his followers as a continuation of the character of the household from which he descended.
The Qadiriyyah and the Love of the Household
The Qadiriyyah order that Sayyiduna Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani رحمه الله founded became one of the most widespread spiritual paths in the entire Muslim world, carried from Baghdad across Africa, Asia, and beyond. Wherever it spread, it carried with it love for the Prophet’s family — woven into its litanies, its teaching, and its spiritual chain, which runs through the Ahl al-Bayt to the Prophet ﷺ. Hundreds of millions of Sunni Muslims across the centuries have been connected, through this order, to a living tradition of devotion to the Prophet’s household. The saint of Baghdad, himself a son of both al-Hasan and al-Husayn, became a channel through which love for the Ahl al-Bayt reached the far corners of the Ummah.
