Why Did Sayyiduna al-Hussain Go to Karbala?

Al-Imam Abu Abdillah al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه — grandson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his fragrant flower, and Master of the Youth of Paradise — did not embark upon his journey to Karbala in pursuit of passing, but in pursuit of the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. He refused to legitimise falsehood through his consent and would not submit to oppression. When the demands of obedience to Allah ﷻ conflicted with personal safety, he prioritised obedience and entrusted the outcome to his Lord. This is the question every reflective Muslim returns to: why did Sayyiduna al-Husayn رضي الله عنه go, knowing what awaited him?

The Grandson Who Embodied the Prophet ﷺ

Such conduct is to be expected from the beloved grandson of the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ, the Seal of the Prophets and Imam of the Messengers, who said of him: “Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn.” Just as the branch remains connected to its root and the fruit reflects the tree from which it grows, so too did Al-Imam al-Husayn رضي الله عنه — nurtured in the Prophetic household and raised in the affection of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — exemplify noble character and unwavering faith. He embodied the courage, sincerity, steadfastness, and devotion that characterised his blessed grandfather ﷺ. To understand his decision is therefore to understand the man: a person formed entirely by the household of prophecy, who could no more consent to injustice than the Prophet ﷺ himself could have.

A Decision That Safeguarded the Conscience of the Ummah

With unwavering certainty and steadfast faith, Sayyiduna al-Husayn رضي الله عنه bore the weight of a decision whose impact would resonate through history — safeguarding the Ummah’s moral conscience and illuminating the path of truth for future generations. By choosing obedience over personal safety and principle over worldly benefit, he provided lasting evidence that the pleasure of Allah ﷻ surpasses the value of life itself, and that truth must be upheld regardless of the cost. His stance was not simply a historical event, but an enduring lesson for believers: honour is found in loyalty to Allah ﷻ, dignity resides in steadfastness upon the truth, and no temporal authority can diminish the status of one who seeks only the Countenance of his Lord.

Karbala Through the Lens of Divine Wisdom

The people of spiritual realisation — al-arifun — view the tragedy of Karbala through the lens of Divine wisdom and complete surrender to the decree of Allah ﷻ. They do not deny the gravity of the trial met by the Blessed Family of the Prophet ﷺ, nor do they diminish the gravity of the oppression committed against them. Rather, they maintain that Al-Imam al-Husayn رضي الله عنه was not overcome by events; he embraced them knowingly and willingly in obedience to Allah ﷻ. Had Allah ﷻ willed for him to be given victory, water would have reached him, his enemies would have been powerless against him, and the hardships borne by the Ahl al-Bayt would have been averted. Yet the Divine decree unfolded otherwise, and Al-Imam al-Husayn رضي الله عنه accepted it with complete contentment, patience, and certainty. The gnostic, therefore, sees Karbala not merely as a story of trial, but as a supreme manifestation of servitude to Allah ﷻ and submission to His wisdom.

How Love for Sayyiduna al-Husayn Is Truly Demonstrated

For this reason, many of the arifin caution against forms of remembrance that suggest objection to the Divine decree or that remain limited to expressions of reverence. They advocate honouring for the injustice inflicted upon him while simultaneously venerating the lofty station to which Allah ﷻ elevated him, and rejoicing in the eternal triumph granted through his sacrifice. The general populace views Karbala and asks, “How much was taken from al-Husayn?” In contrast, the people of marifah reflect, “How much was granted to al-Husayn?”
