Of all the figures in the Ahl al-Bayt, Sayyidah Zaynab bint ʿAlī رضي الله عنها is perhaps the least discussed in contemporary Sunni circles — and among the most important. She was the granddaughter of the Prophet ﷺ, the daughter of Sayyiduna ʿAlī and Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضوان الله عليهما, the sister of Sayyiduna al-Ḥasan and Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضوان الله عليهما, and the woman who — after witnessing the massacre at Karbala — stood before the ruler Yazīd in his own court and delivered a speech that shook history. Without Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها, the story of Karbala might have been buried.
The Witness of Karbala
Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها was present at Karbala on the 10th of Muḥarram 61 AH. She witnessed the killing of her brother Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه, the slaughter of his companions, and the captivity that followed. She was taken with the surviving women and children — the prisoners of the Prophet’s family — on the journey to Kūfah and then to Damascus, to the court of Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah. What she did in that court is one of the most remarkable acts of moral courage in Islamic history.
Her Speech Before Yazīd
Classical sources preserve the account of Sayyidah Zaynab’s رضي الله عنها speech before Yazīd — a prisoner before the ruler who believed himself the master of the moment. She did not weep silently. She did not accept his narrative. She stood and spoke with the fearlessness of one who had nothing left to lose and everything to bear witness to. Her words, as reported in classical sources, declared: “Plot whatever you wish to plot. Strive however you wish to strive. By Allāh, you will never erase our memory, you will never extinguish our light, and you will never reach our heights.” These were not the words of a defeated woman. They were the words of the Prophet’s granddaughter.
Carrying the Message
In the hours and days after the massacre, it was Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها who gathered the survivors, protected Imām ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn رحمه الله from execution, and organised the transmission of what had happened. She was the witness, the protector, and the voice. Without her courage, the full truth of Karbala might have been suppressed by the political power that ordered it.
Her Legacy in Sunni Honour
The Sunni tradition honours Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها as among the greatest women in Islamic history. Her shrine in Damascus is visited by Sunni and Shia Muslims alike, in recognition of a woman whose courage was not tribal or sectarian but universal — the courage of truth in the face of power. To love the Ahl al-Bayt is to love Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها. To honour the Prophet’s family is to honour the granddaughter who refused to let their sacrifice be forgotten.
Who was Sayyidah Zaynab bint ʿAlī?
Sayyidah Zaynab رضي الله عنها was the granddaughter of the Prophet ﷺ — daughter of Sayyiduna ʿAlī and Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضوان الله عليهما, sister of Sayyiduna al-Ḥasan and Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضوان الله عليهما. She was present at Karbala, witnessed the martyrdom of her brother, and was taken prisoner to Kūfah and Damascus, where she famously addressed Yazīd in his own court.
What happened to Sayyidah Zaynab after Karbala?
She was taken as a prisoner to Kūfah and then to Damascus. In Yazīd’s court she delivered her celebrated speech condemning his actions and declaring the family’s honour inextinguishable. After her eventual release, she continued transmitting the truth of what happened at Karbala. She is credited with ensuring that the martyrdom of Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه was never forgotten or misrepresented.
Why is Sayyidah Zaynab important for Sunni Muslims?
Because she is part of the Prophet’s ﷺ family — and because her courage and her role as witness represent the highest expression of the prophetic values she inherited. Honouring her is part of honouring the Ahl al-Bayt as the Qurʼān and Sunnah require. Her shrine in Damascus is visited by Sunni Muslims as a site of Islamic historical memory and reverence.
