There is a verse attributed to Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafii رحمه الله that cuts through fourteen centuries of sectarian noise with the clean edge of a single fearless declaration. It was written at a time when expressing love for the Prophet’s family could expose a Sunni scholar to the accusation of Shia sympathies — a political charge that could damage a scholar’s reputation and career. Imam al-Shafii’s رحمه الله response was not to pull back. It was to lean forward.
The Verse
Imam al-Shafii رحمه الله wrote: “If love of the family of Muhammad is Rafidi belief, then let jinn and mankind bear witness that I am a Rafidi.” The word Rafidi was used in his era as a polemical label for those suspected of Shia sympathies, particularly on account of their love for the Prophet’s family. It was a charge used to silence and discredit. Imam al-Shafii’s رحمه الله verse is a refusal to be silenced. It says: if this love makes me a Rafidi in your eyes, I accept the name — because I will not surrender the love.
Who Was Imam al-Shafii?
Imam al-Shafii رحمه الله (150–204 AH) is one of the four Imams of Sunni jurisprudence — the founder of the Shafii school followed by hundreds of millions of Muslims across Egypt, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Arab world. He was a descendant of the Banu Muttalib — the same clan as the Prophet ﷺ — which gave his love for the family a personal as well as scholarly dimension. The Full Extent of His Position
Beyond the famous verse, Imam al-Shafii رحمه الله held that salawat on the Prophet’s family in the final tashahhud is a required pillar of prayer — not merely recommended. He wrote: “O family of the Prophet — love for you is an obligation from Allah, revealed in the Quran.
