The Four Great Imāms and Their Love for the Ahl al-Bayt

What all four founders of the Sunni legal schools — Abū Ḥanīfah, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal — said about love for the Prophet's family. One tradition, one voice, one obligation.

The Sunni legal tradition rests on four schools — Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī — named after their founding Imāms. When all four agree on something, the matter is settled beyond reasonable scholarly dispute. All four agreed on love for the Ahl al-Bayt. Their statements are preserved in the classical biographical and scholarly literature and taken together form a wall of testimony that no honest reading of Sunni history can ignore.

Imām Abū Ḥanīfah al-Nuʿmān رحمه الله

Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله — founder of the most widely followed Sunni legal school — studied under Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq رحمه الله, a direct descendant of Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه. He held this connection as among the most precious of his scholarly experiences, saying: “Were it not for the two years I spent with Jaʿfar, Nuʿmān would have perished.” His legal positions, his transmitted narrations, and the reports of his contemporaries all confirm a deep and genuine love for the Prophet’s family ﷺ.

Imām Mālik ibn Anas رحمه الله

Imām Mālik رحمه الله spent his entire scholarly life in Madīnah — the city of the Prophet ﷺ, where the presence of the Prophet’s family was woven into every scholarly chain and every physical reminder. His statement is direct and recorded in classical sources: “Whoever does not love the family of the Prophet ﷺ, his heart has no goodness in it.” For Imām Mālik رحمه الله, love for the Ahl al-Bayt was not a legal technicality but an expression of the character of a true believer.

Imām al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله

Imām al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله — himself a descendant of the Banū Muṭṭalib, the same clan as the Prophet ﷺ — wrote the most celebrated declaration of love for the Prophet’s family in all of Sunni scholarly literature: “If love of the family of Muḥammad is Rāfiḍī belief, then let jinn and mankind bear witness that I am a Rāfiḍī.” He also held that ṣalawāt on the family is a legal pillar of prayer — making love for the Ahl al-Bayt embedded in the very definition of valid Sunni worship.

Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله

Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله — the Imām who endured the Muʿtazilite inquisition and refused to compromise his theology under torture — left the most authoritative Sunni scholarly statement about Sayyiduna ʿAlī رضي الله عنه ever recorded: “No one among the companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ has as many authenticated narrations regarding his virtues as ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.” He wept when speaking of Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه. His Musnad contains an entire section devoted to the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt.

One Voice

Abū Ḥanīfah studied under the Prophet’s descendant and called it the most valuable learning of his life. Mālik said a heart without this love has no goodness. Al-Shāfiʿī declared it a Qurʼānic obligation and refused to moderate his love under political pressure. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal filled his Musnad with their virtues and wept for Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه. These are the four Imāms — and they spoke with one voice.

Did all four Sunni Imāms affirm love for the Ahl al-Bayt?

Yes, without exception. Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله studied under the Prophet’s descendant. Mālik رحمه الله said a heart lacking this love has no goodness. Al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله declared it a Qurʼānic obligation in both verse and law. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله said ʿAlī has more virtue narrations than any other companion and wept for Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه.

What did Imām al-Shāfiʿī say about love for the Prophet’s family?

He wrote: “If love of the family of Muḥammad is Rāfiḍī belief, then let jinn and mankind bear witness that I am a Rāfiḍī.” He also held ṣalawāt on the family to be a legal pillar of prayer, and he described love for the family as a Qurʼānic obligation in multiple contexts.

What is the significance of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah studying under Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq?

It demonstrates that the intellectual chains of Sunni jurisprudence run directly through the household of the Prophet ﷺ. Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله — founder of the most widely followed Sunni school — regarded his studies under a direct descendant of Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه as among the most essential knowledge he ever received.
