Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ رضي الله عنها: Chief of the Women of Paradise

Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ رضي الله عنها — daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, mother of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, and Chief of the Women of Paradise. Her station in Sunni Islām, her titles, and her enduring legacy.

Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ رضي الله عنها holds a station in Sunni Islām that the ḥadīth literature establishes with extraordinary clarity. She was the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, the wife of Sayyiduna ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه, the mother of Sayyiduna al-Ḥasan and Sayyiduna al-Ḥusayn رضوان الله عليهما — and the woman whom the Prophet ﷺ described as a part of himself.

“Fāṭimah Is a Part of Me”

The Prophet ﷺ declared in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: “Fāṭimah is a part of me. Whoever angers her has angered me.” This is one of the most definitive statements in the entire ḥadīth corpus. Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها is not merely close to the Prophet ﷺ — she is identified as part of him. To love her is inseparable from loving him. To honour her is inseparable from honouring the Prophet ﷺ.

Chief of the Women of Paradise

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, the Prophet ﷺ declared Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها “the chief of the women of Paradise” — sayyidah nisāʾ ahl al-jannah. This title places her at the summit of all the women of all time in the sight of Allāh ﷻ — above Maryam, above Āsiyah, above every woman who has ever lived. It is an honour that Sunni Muslims are required to know, to affirm, and to honour in the way they speak of her and think of her.

Her Grief After the Prophet ﷺ

The classical sources record that Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها was devastated by the death of her father ﷺ in a way that no description can fully convey. The Prophet ﷺ had whispered to her before his death that she would be the first of his family to follow him — and she smiled, because she would be with him again soon. She died approximately six months after the Prophet ﷺ — the first of his household to join him. Her grief was the grief of a daughter who had lost not only her father, but the light that had illuminated the entire world.

The Prophetic Tenderness Toward Her

Classical sources preserve scenes of extraordinary tenderness between the Prophet ﷺ and his daughter. He would stand when she entered the room, kiss her on the forehead, seat her in his own place, and address her as “O Fāṭimah.” When he was preparing for ṣalāh, he would often begin by passing by her door. His love for her was public, demonstrative, and recorded by dozens of companions. To love Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها is to love what the Prophet ﷺ loved most dearly in this world.

What titles does Sayyidah Fāṭimah hold in Sunni Islam?

Her most celebrated titles include: al-Zahrāʾ (the Radiant), al-Batrūl (the Chaste), Sayyidah Nisāʾ al-ʿĀlamīn (Chief of the Women of the Worlds), and Umm Abīhā (Mother of Her Father). Each title reflects a different dimension of her spiritual and personal excellence as recognised in the authentic ḥadīth tradition.

Why is Sayyidah Fāṭimah called a part of the Prophet ﷺ?

Because the Prophet ﷺ said so himself in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: “Fāṭimah is a part of me. Whoever angers her has angered me.” This statement is not metaphorical — it establishes a real and binding connection between her honour and the Prophet’s honour, making love and respect for her a direct expression of love and respect for him ﷺ.

When did Sayyidah Fāṭimah die?

Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها died approximately six months after the Prophet ﷺ, making her the first member of his household to follow him. Before his death, the Prophet ﷺ whispered to her that she would be the first of his family to join him — and she smiled at this news.
